    I know this video is a bit older and the 9 is already coming out, but thanks for this video. I've been looking into creating a couple of UA-cam channels around my food forest and the 8 pro is what I'm using, but don't know much about photography or videography and am mostly looking for the dummies version of setting and forgetting most of it. Hello, I really appreciate your thoughtful comment and I understand how complicated learning about photography/videography can be... I am still using my 8 Pro and have made a few videos with them including this 6 months later review: ua-cam.com/video/rEnn_z8uxWA/v-deo.html However, I don't know if it's helpful enough in getting you started with general settings nor do I know any content creators teaching that specific topic, but maybe something I will consider. I wanted the Canon SX740 due to the zoom, but was also looking at the ZV1. The issue is I cant find the SX740 anywhere online or retail location. Let me ask you is it a huge learning cirve to go from Canon menu to Sony menu? I currently have a Canon SX530 and you cant beat the 50X zoom, but the camera is a bit bulky for travel, which is what I want the sx740 or ZV1 for. I am just concerned about the zoom range or the menu on the Sony being too complicated. I have only really ever had Nikon and Canon. Can ayone help me out here as far as commenting on the zoom and the menu? Thanks

    • @BrianCatalano
      @BrianCatalano 21 день тому

      That's a great question and hard to fully answer as I think it really depends on how flexible one is. I currently have a canon camera, a Nikon, a Fuji, a GoPro, DJI mini 2, my Google pixel 8 pro, and two Sony's right now... And it's always a pain to toggle between them because all their menu systems are so different. Yet, for me I sort of enjoy trying to learn new systems and like the challenge. The newer Sony's are the best for me, but the zv1 has the older Sony menu which isn't awful but takes a bit to get used to. However, with the zv1 it's still one of the easiest cameras to just pick up and shoot if you don't mind everything in intelligent auto and then you can slowly adjust as you learn more. So it's hard to say if it will be a huge learning curve for you in particular, but for me, it's been worth it! Hope that helps!

      @@BrianCatalano Mainly city scenery at night and some during the day (70% night 30% day) is what I wil be using it for. Also maybe to film birds and other animals. So versatility is good, but dont want to deal with tons of bulk and lenses. I have EOS R5 and its become a pain to haul around. The SX530 is basically a bridge camera, but kind of a little bulky , which is why I was looking for a more compact camera with some of the capabilities. The ZV1 seems to check most boxes except for zoom. What is the actual zoom range on it? Also I was looking and seems that time lapse function requires more work than a Canon that basically does it for you. This is what makes me nervous about getting into the Sony brand, sems like it might be complicated. Cameras like Fuji and Canon are more intuitive as far as menus and useability. I was hoping they would come up with something more substantial for the ZV but all they did was the ZV1 F which is rather useless unless you are vlogging. The ZV1-II doesnt seem to address lack of zoom. Seems like cameras are being created more for vlogging than actual photography. Doesnt sem like anyone is really making any big moves in the compact category. The SSX was a good line but Canon jut stopped after the SX740. They failed to bring anything new. If I cant get the SX740 I might just go with teh ZV1 and as you said, learn a bit and who know maybe I will transition into a Sony camera person.

    It there anyone knows if I use iso 800 on zve1 with flexible iso mode rather than iso 640 will improve a bit? That doesn't make sense if sony changes base iso on fx3/6 with cine ei mode. There must be a reason.

    • @BrianCatalano
      @BrianCatalano 25 днів тому

      Hello... And good question. Well, I believe what is happening is that the discrepancy in base ISOs in the FX3 and zve1 is simply that Sony wanted to standardize the bases in cine ei between the fx6 and fx3, so they could be used in a multi cam set up... And Sony does this by adjusting noise reduction within the software. So it's less a tolerance of the sensor but a modification done by the camera itself. So with the zve1, it has kept their noise reduction processing so that 640 is the cleanest base ISO and not 800. So personally, I'd keep it in 640 for best results since it's just a software application. If you were able to get RAW out of the camera, and add your own noise reduction, then maybe you could do shoot at 800. Does that make sense?

      That's a reasonable concern, but I have done this and since I record in 4k and Instagram prefers 1080p, cropping in, for me, has never been an issue. That being said, the 3 or 3pro'a vertical shooting capability is amazing and if you can afford it and you are mainly wanting vertical content then it's worth considering. Yet, again the crop on the mini2 (or mini4k) has never looked pixelated when I've done it

    hahaha f0.95 is insane!!! This video was awesome. I'm planning on upgrading from my fx30 and hoping to have the option to use my APSC lenses so this was very helpful : ) Just wondering, the slight warping/distortion in some of the handheld shots, is that coming from the active IBIS stabilisation or have you done any stabilisation in post?

      @@BejaeIngate hello and yes... This lens is crazy and I use way, way more than I thought I would have on multiple full frame bodies. As for the stability, I made a huge error, where in active, I accidentally and manually set the focal length to 50mm and not 35mm which made that warpiness. When the lens is set up right, you won't get that effect... I highly recommend picking this lens up!

    Surprised to hear that the ZF build quality seems worse than the A7cii. Considering swapping from A7cii to ZF because of build quality issues with the Sony. Alao, is the human and animal eye-AF close between the two, or is Sony still ahead? Thanks for the video!

    • @BrianCatalano
      @BrianCatalano Місяць тому

      @@kennethj.oriordan2898 hello! Yes, this was my sense that Nikon Zf was built like a tank in some respects but not necessarily better. The Zf is a beautiful piece or design, but at the expense of the ergonomics being really uncomfortable. Also, monitor's screen felt flimsy and would turn off at weird angles and times. In general, the camera felt less dependable--maybe it was my copy. However without question, the reliability with autofocus, still heavily favors Sony along with the video quality/features. I also find the a7c's grip the best of the compact cameras and its performance as a hybrid, is unmatched for me. That all being said, I still fully recommend the Zf and am still considering picking one up as the picture controls make up for a lot of the quirks, but I just don't know if you wouldn't regret swapping to it from the A7Cii. I have the Tamron 20-40mm on my A7R5, I wanted a second camera for the stabilisation. I mainly shoot video vertical these day for social media. Im trying to figure if I need the 11mm or it'll be to wide for reveal shots (interior and exterior) or I just could use the kit lens and swap my 20-40 over to the EVE1 when I need it. My problem is trying to visualise the distortion in vertical as I dont think I need to be as wide as horizon.

    • @BrianCatalano
      @BrianCatalano Місяць тому

      That's a great but difficult question to answer as I think we all have different tolerances for what is acceptable with distortion. I have the Tamron 20-40, and it's now my favorite travel/street photography lens... Yet, if I'm shooting real estate I still always bring my 10-18 and will punch into about 13 or 14mm... And the distortion isn't great but it's also never been a deal breaker. I probably should invest in a better full frame ultra wide, but they are usually so expensive... So if I were you, I'd probably pick up the 11mm as I don't think you'll regret having a wider option on hand

Yes, that would be a great option as well. It's not a lens I own as I have decided not to invest too heavily into big and relatively expensive APSC zooms, as I do try to keep my footprint light when traveling. Hello, I appreciate you taking the time to comment, and I wish I got paid to make this video! Just curious though, who do you think would have paid me, Sony or Nikon? I feel like I was more favorable to Nikon throughout this review. Yet, I'm also not sure if you watched the whole video (or own these cameras yourself), but both brands have their strengths and weaknesses like everything in life. I own and love cameras from both brands. I also tend to not lean into tribalistic feelings about anything, especially as superficial as cameras. I love Fuji cameras too and Canon's new r5ii looks amazing! Yet for now I'm sticking with Nikon and Sony only because I don't get paid by anybody and I have to buy my own glass, so it's easier to keep to just two ecosystems. Either way, thanks for sharing your feelings, and I hope you find what you are looking for in a camera or camera review in the future. Best of luck!
